The Charminar has become the monument by which the city of Hyderabad is symbolized. Hyderabad, or the city of the Nawabs, is a beautiful city that is famous for its hospitality. It is a bustling tourist destination.
The word Charminar means the monument of Four Minarets. It is located in the Old City area of Hyderabad. It is located very close to the Mecca Masjid (mosque). Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah, constructed this monument way back in the year 1591.

The Charminar is square in shape. With a beautiful fountain on the ground floor, The ceiling it magnificently decorated. Once you reach the upper floors of the building the balcony offers a beautiful view of the inner portion of Charminar. The arches are decorated with designs. The Charminar offers a beautiful view of the Old City. The four Gates leading up to Charminar, are simple structures yet they have an appeal of their own. Passing these gates and approaching the Charminar, gives one the sensation of going back in time.
Once you manage to climb up the steps, you get a breathtaking view of the Mecca Masjid on one side, and the Golconda Fort, far away. Legend says that there is a hidden passage way leading from, below the Charminar, straight inside the Golconda Fort. However, nothing has been discovered, so far.
Surrounding the Charminar is the Charminar Market. You will find one of the most dazzling collections of dress materials, and glass and wooden bangles, at the Charminar market. This is a 'not to be missed' experience. The market, also, has numerous shops selling miniature, marble replicas iof the Charminar.
The Andhra Pradesh State Tourism department offers very reasonable sightseeing package tours to the Charminar. There are buses that will take you to Charminar, straight from the Hyderabad Airport at Begumpet. Numerous private tour operators, also arrange for trips to the Charminar area.
